Can you live with this? At the April 14 meeting of IDAG, a draft was
discussed. Based on discussion and suggestions, here is a revision:

MISSION
The Instructional Design Affinity Group (IDAG) promotes the use of
instructional design for distance learning. IDAG is affiliated with the
Maryland Distance Learning Association (MDLA).

GOALS
. Promotes the value of instructional design for effective learning
. Addresses the learning needs of people who do instructional design,
through collaboration and sharing
. Fosters partnerships and networking opportunities
. Supports distance learning organizations in Maryland and the region

[Considerations:
Simple, plain language
Language should last for many years unchanged
Not string two or more verbs, adjectives, or nouns when one word will do
Consistent with MDLA mission and goals]

With thanks to Linda Bruce for finding these guidelines:
. It is a marketing tool? Does it tell everyone the reasons for the
coalition's existence?
. It is a tool for the Group's leadership? Does it give leadership a clear
position to use when working with partners and networking?
. It is a motivational tool? Does it encourage members and allies to work
toward a shared vision?
. Is it short? McDonald's mission statement is only four words: quality,
consistency, cleanliness, service. Brevity will enhance understandability.
Make it only long enough to cover the intended purpose of the organization.
. Is it memorizable? Use simple words-ones people can remember and actually
use.
. Is it audible? Use words and phrases that sound good as well. Members
will use the mission statement talking on the telephone and at public
meetings. Try for a conversational tone.
. Is it a "becoming" statement? Look forward toward what the Group wants
educational institutions to become. State not just what the Group is, but
how it will reach its goals.
. Is it unique? Differentiates the Group from other organizations.
