This seems to be an issue wherever you look. It was one of the main
topics at the ITC conference recently and several audio conferences are
discussing it. In Virginia, 4 community colleges recently received a
state grant to work together to create a state-wide online course to
train online teachers. For the colleges it will help create a pool of
trained teachers and for the instructors they will only have to take the
course once rather than one for each college. We have an advisory
committee of about 10 additional community college representatives. We
are trying to finish it to run a pilot in June. We can certainly share
our experiences if you are interested.

At the MDLA last week a few of us talked about the professional
development courses/workshops we had, or were working on, to train
faculty/adjuncts to teach online. It seems that we all do many similar
things and I would like to see if there is any interest in getting
together to create some kind of shared resources with the possibility of
creating an optional state-wide certification process for
adjuncts/faculty in online teaching competencies. I have experience of
being involved in a national certification program for college tutors
and I found that many people like the option to get certified. Bobbi
mentioned that MOL had talked about something similar in the past...

If you're interested in exploring this idea, please let me know and we
can go from there.

Thanks, I enjoyed getting to meet some of this group at MDLA and hope we
can work together on some projects.

Julie
