Yes, there is no reason why what we come up with couldn't be available to anyone, anywhere. I only mentioned MOL because MOL is already a consortium of colleges...so we wouldn't have to hassle with the whole monster of creating a recognized consortium in order to make the sharing/collaboration of this project (certificate) "legitimate". So that part is already done for us. Hooray!

I am also very glad that we are beginning to get members from outside the state of Maryland. I love the idea of having so many different perspectives from different areas of the country and different colleges. Not to mention that we have some great minds to pull ideas from!

Jennifer, please keep me posted about the faculty training you mentioned below. If you don't get an offer to host those training sessions please job my memory about it again. I will work on finding a site through MOL or MDLA for you if no one vounteers.

Bobbi

I agree with Suzi! This is an idea that would be valuable outside of MD.
Right now our business faculty are paying eCollege to train and certify
them. They wanted me to offer the training but I said no. It was too big
a job for one person on top of all my other responsibilities. With a
collective team effort to build the training for multiple systems and
offer it to a broader audience than just MD schools. We could really
market it and share the resources around.

I had worked on creating a faculty training site for BB before I left
Carroll CC. I think I still have the archived course in my stuff. I had
talked to Bobbi about it at one time and would gladly offer it as a
starting point for the BB training. It definitely needs some revamping
but might offer a place to start. Would anyone be willing to host that
course site and give everyone access to it? Unfortunately, I can't
because I'm on eCollege now.

Hey, all,

Definitely still interested, but had a question about the scope of the
online certification. Would this ultimately just be something for
Maryland Online schools, or would it be something that folks outside of
MD could participate in, and possibly QM-wide?

For example, I know a school in Philadelphia, PA that's really intrigued
by the idea. :)

Wow...I'm so excited to see this idea rearing it's head again. I am
going to speak to MOL about helping us to pull this project together,
and put some kind of MOL "official" stamp on it. Since MOL is already a
consortium of Maryland colleges, that political animal is already taken
care of. That will also make it much easier to call it a
"certification"...if we could get all MOL member institutions to agree
that a particular set of trainings would qualify someone to be a
"certified" online instructor.

Perhaps this time there are enough of us interested in participating
that we will get things rolling. The idea of sharing our online faculty
trainings has been discussed before, but it didn't seem like enough
people were interested and the idea just sort of drifted away.

In the mean time, it might be a good idea to start collecting our ideas
and thoughts in some organized manner. Why don't we start by sharing
the titles/subject of faculty trainings we already have developed?
Would someone like to volunteer to keep a master list for us?

I suggest that we include in the list all trainings that are offered to
faculty to help them prepare to teach online. I think it should include
both f2f and online trainings...we can always convert the f2f to online
trainings later. So when we put something on our list it should
include:

Training name
Delivery format (f2f or online)
Preparation for teaching online or for developing online, or both
Institution

Sound like a plan?

Bobbi

Great idea on how to get us started and organized Bobbi. I'd be happy to
compile the master plan from what we post here. Would it be a good idea
to organize a f2f meeting for interested people, maybe in May after the
semester is over? In that meeting we could look at the master list, I
could share my experience with national tutor certification processes
and logistics, perhaps we could have Joan talk about her experiences in
Virginia and the state grant, Bobbi could give us feedback on MOL, and
we could come up with a plan. I'd be happy to host in Frederick, but I
know a number of us are in Baltimore so maybe that'd be a better area to
convene? We could also try online conferencing...though sometimes it's
good to meet f2f for the initial planning - maybe with an option of
conferencing in at a distance for those who can't travel.

Thanks,
Julie

I am in the midst, and am almost done, creating an on-line training
workshop
that will last about 8-10 weeks. It's intense training, but the results
of
my f2f version were good. Our faculty have asked for it to be
online..... I
agree they should experience what it's like to be an online student
before
they go online themselves.
I'm happy to share my course, which is in Blackboard...... it's not done
yet, but almost.
