Heya, Bobbi!!

I'd be happy to help out in SL! (and rescue you from the dreaded
Orientation Island! :|)

All new residents in SL end up at Orientation Island now, which is good
and bad all at the same time. Good because folks new to SL have a space
to learn SL navigation, bad because some of the elements I saw when I
was rescuing new-to-SL RL friends didn't function properly, so they
didn't get shown as having completed their task, even though they had.
So I teleported them off Orientation Island and let them walk around the
areas I had built. :)

I'll be on SL Monday night starting at 6pm. When you log in to SL, do a
search for me. There's a search button at the bottom of the screen,
click that, then from the search window, choose the people tab and enter
Xirconnia Morphett. Click on the little people icon, and my profile
should pop up. In the profile window, click the send an instant message
button (I can't remember exactly what it's called at the moment, either
Send an Instant Message, or Send an IM).

In reference to Part 2 (the certification), I'd love to find out more
about it!

We've got a 2-phase process in place at Peirce for new faculty
orientation. When adjunct faculty first get hired I create a new account
for them, enroll them in an online sandbox and they meet with the
Manager of Faculty Recruitment and Professional Development who goes
over policies and procedures. If I'm on campus they meet with me face to
face. If I'm virtual, they meet with our Faculty Placement Specialist to
go over the details of logging into the course sites for the first time
and they receive a packet of instructional materials that I created for
training purposes (there's a lot to go over, so all faculty get a packet
that reiterates what we discuss during the initial training session).
The basics of the packet are 1) logging in, 2) getting to the training
course - Faculty Support, 3) updating the online syllabus.

When they're ready to begin teaching, be it face to face or online we
set up a time to go over the basics again, and go over any questions
they might have.

All new faculty are put onto a Watchlist, one week before the start of
classes and at the start of the session I go through their online
courses or companions to see if everything's been updated. If I see a
potential issue, I contact the faculty member to go over their course
with them and discuss ways to avoid a potential issue, as well as ways
they can enhance their courses that they might want to try out.

The Faculty Support course that we've set up contains all of our
training docs in Power Point format, as well as many in printable Word
docs, and a few in shockwave interactive simulation format. I've been
changing the Power Points over to Word docs as I get the chance, and
creating smaller chunks of information for ease of download.

:)

Hi all,

I have not yet spoken with MOL, but I've heard through the grapevine
that they are considering developing a rubric type of tool that would be
used for either evaluating online teaching skills or developing some
kind of instructor training/program. This is completely unofficial and
only in the discussion stage...but certainly fits with our ideas.

It would be useful if we would begin collecting our list of faculty
training sessions now so we will have some ideas of what is already
available for our April meeting (still to be scheduled). Melissa, is
the Google document ready to "release" to the whole group, or are we
still in the testing phase? I will add my list of trainings as soon as
I know it is ok to do so.

Thanks,
Bobbi

Suzi,

I am not usually available on Mondays between 6:00 and 8:00, but I
finally got into SL for the first time (well, the first time in a few
years. lol). I created my avatar (I had that planned...lol...I am sexy
in SL. lol), but now I don't know what to do! lol. Would you be
willing to meet me in SL some time and give me an overview? I don't
even know how to get from orientation island to somewhere
else...although I did get SOMEWHERE, lol, I don't really know how I did
it and probably couldn't duplicate the task. lol.

Anyway, if you could give me some help I would appreciate it. I could
meet you Monday night after 8:30 or so, or just about any time other
than the middle of the day. I teach 1:00-2:00. By the way, my name in
SL is Sayra Sweet.

Thanks
Bobbi
